Avalanche Safety

Joe Despres Memorial Transceiver Training Sessions

Joe Despres was killed in an avalanche at Yankee Doodle Lake November 28, 2001 (CAIC accident report). To encourage avalanche hazard awareness, RMRG offers dryland avalanche transceiver trainings annually in early December. No matter how novice or advanced you are, practicing is a must to maintain transceiver proficiency.

If you put together a group of five (5) or more people who want to learn, RMRG will be pleased to provide group instruction and target transceivers for an after dark, dry land transciever training at Chautauqua Ranger Cottage in Boulder. Sessions are typically about two hours long. Free, contact Participants can use their own transceivers or RMRG will loan students a free transceiver for the training session with a deposit of a driver's license. You do need your own warm clothes and headlamp.

Annual Avalanche Rescue Training

RMRG practices organized avalanche rescue at least once annually as part of our regular search and rescue training schedule (PDF). This is training in organized avalanche rescue, not avalanche hazard awareness or companion rescue.
